Serving up a ‘recipe for success’ at Flavour Fest

City College Plymouth and Column Bakehouse are joining forces to serve up a recipe for success at this year’s Flavour Fest.

The South West’s largest food and drink festival returns to Plymouth City Centre Piazza this weekend and City College students have been preparing for their exhibition showcase with bread making classes from the baking experts at Column Bakehouse.

Olivia Robertson, 17, is studying Professional Cookery at the College and is one of the team of students who will be showing off their skills at Flavour Fest. She said: “I can’t wait for Flavour Fest weekend. It was so much fun getting bread making tips and coaching from the Column Bakehouse team, so I’m really looking forward to working with them again on the stand. I just hope the weather stays dry - there’s nothing worse than soggy bread!”

The team at the joint City College and Column Bakehouse stand will be offering delicious tasting samples and goods for purchase whilst the next generation of hospitality and catering professionals deliver bread making and baking demos.

Mark Du’chesne, Column Bakehouse Manager said: “Flavour Fest is an opportunity for people to experience great food, produced using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, which is exactly what Column Bakehouse is all about. In addition to producing award-winning breads and running a series of short courses, we are a social enterprise and as such it’s our mission to give back to the community. Teaming up with City College to provide work experience for the students has been a real recipe for success and we are looking forward to seeing them demonstrate their skills on our stand.”

The College offers a range of catering courses from their Junior Chef Academy for 14-16 year olds through to full and part-time courses and Apprenticeships for all ages. Their catering team will be on hand to answer questions about the variety of opportunities available for those interested in a career in the catering industry. Join them for a chat and some delicious free samples at stands 84-86 over Flavour Fest weekend.
